Hemangiopericytomas of the CNS are classified separately from the Solitary Fibrous Tumors in the most recent WHO Classification of Tumors of the CNS. They are characterized by high vascular density that often bulges to form distinctive staghorn shaped vasculature. These tumors, like the SFTs, are CD34 immunoreactive and show pericellular reticulin. This tumor also has been embolized therapeutically prior to surgery to control the hemorrhage potential, thus leaving foci of necrosis unrelated to the tumor biology. |
