This is a benign tumor arising in both peripheral nerves and cranial nerves. A component of Neurofibromatosis Type 2 when it occurs bilaterally in CN VIII, it may be found in nerve roots in both NF 1 and NF 2. The images show both a compact Antoni A area and a loose Antoni B area. Histologically, the Schwannoma is characterized by elongated, nuclei that appear to twist. The tumor can be distinguished from the neurofibroma by the presence of neurofilament positive axons coursing through the neurofibroma. |
