Capillary hemangioblastomas are parenchymal tumors of the CNS that can be either sporadic or arise multifocally in patients with Von Hippel Lindau disease. These patients will also manifest histologically identical tumors in the retina. They will also manifest renal cell carcinomas, an important consideration in the diagnostic consideration of the tumor. Renal cell carcinomas manifest prominent nucleoli and frequent mitotic figures, features not found in capillary hemangioblastomas. The stromal cells of capillary hemangioblastomas may be cytologically atypical, however. Immunohistochemical identification of Neuron Specific enolase and inhibin are useful means of identifying the stromal cells. |
